Baptism

Baptism forgives all personal sin, takes away original sin (but leaves concupiscence, a tendency toward sin), infuses sanctifying grace, and is necessary for salvation. Baptism imprints in the soul a character, a certain spiritual and indelible Sign, and so can only be received validly once. Persons of any age may be baptized, from infant to adult. Only the baptized may receive the other Sacraments.

BAPTISM POLICY

Baptism Preparation Class is on the second Sunday of every month at 1:15 PM

Please call the Office for more information.

Baptisms are celebrated on the first and third Sunday of the month after the Noon Mass.

Please call the Office for more information and to schedule baptism of your child.

Parents must attend a “Baptism Preparation Class” before the child can be baptized. The baptism date and time will not be scheduled before this class is completed and verified.

Selecting a qualified godparent/sponsor is very important.

Godparent/Sponsor Requirements According to Church Law (cc.874)

You may have 2 godparents/sponsors, but only 1 is required in the Diocese of Colorado Springs. He/she must be at least 18 years old. If there are 2 godparents/sponsors, one must be male and one must be female.

The godparent/sponsor must be a fully initiated Catholic Christian. This means that he/she is baptized, receives Eucharist, and is confirmed.

The godparent/sponsor must be practicing the Catholic faith. This means that they are regularly attending and participating at Masses – and should be registered with a parish. This also means that if married he/she was married in the Church, and if no longer married, the marriage was annulled.

If one of the 2 godparents/sponsors is not Catholic or has not regularly participated in the life of the Church for a long time, it is highly recommended that this person attend a baptism preparation class well in advance of your child’s baptism.

If the godparent/sponsor is not currently registered and participating as a member of St. Joseph’s Church, then a “Godparent Permission Form” (forms available at the class or in the parish office) must be filled out by the godparent and signed by his/her parish priest. This information needs to be returned to St. Joseph’s parish secretary 2 weeks prior to the child’s baptism. Note: if this information is not received in this time, then the baptism will be rescheduled for another date after the information arrives.

If the selected godparent/sponsor cannot be present at the time of baptism, a proxy (relative or friend) may be invited to stand in for them during the baptism.

The parents are not required to be registered member of St. Joseph’s Church, but it is highly recommended that the parents register at a parish that they plan to attend with their newly baptized child. If the parents are members of another parish and are seeking baptism at St. Joseph’s Church, a letter will be required from their parish granting permission for the baptism to be held at St. Joseph’s Church.
